PNRR Project: Restoration of the Canevon

Within the framework of the PNRR project “Protection and Enhancement of Rural Architecture and Landscape”, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, restoration works on the “Canevon” began in October 2023 at Villa Bolzonella Cittadella Vigodarzere in Cittadella. This 19th-century building, located in the villa’s garden next to the church, forms part of a complex of significant historical and cultural interest, protected as a listed monument and dating back to the late 16th century, with earlier structures traceable to the 13th century.

The “Canevon” exhibits the typical features of rural Venetian architecture, with a portico once used for storing agricultural tools and a wooden truss roof. According to historical cadastral records, the building underwent functional changes over time, adapting to the activities of the estate, while still preserving the identity traits of its original architecture. However, at the time of the intervention, it was in a severe state of decay and lacked a defined function.

The restoration project

The restoration, designed by Faccio Engineering S.r.l. of Padua and carried out under the site supervision of architect Mattia Rizzi, is part of a broader strategy to safeguard and enhance the entire complex and its historic park. The current landscaping is attributed to Giuseppe Jappelli (after 1824–1830), commissioned by Count Andrea Cittadella Vigodarzere (1804–1870). The intervention focused on preserving the construction and stylistic features of the building, with particular attention to the traditional techniques and geometry of the roof, which was entirely rebuilt to ensure improved seismic safety.

In line with a functional recovery and enhancement of the estate, the “Canevon” has also been equipped with accessible sanitary facilities on the ground floor, supporting the activities already hosted on site.

The works are scheduled for completion by December 2025. The “Canevon” will then be open to the public as a support and service facility during events organized within the complex, and particularly during the guided tours of the Villa and Garden, which have long been promoted in collaboration with the IAT Office of Cittadella and its cultural staff.

The building will become the starting point for the discovery of the Garden: visitors will be able to stop there after visiting the Villa and receive all the necessary information before embarking on the long walk through the park.

Public opening will be scheduled as part of the guided tours throughout the year, with higher frequency between April and October, according to tourist flows.
